The Connection Protocol
Disconnecting is easy to promise and hard to keep. The Connection Protocol is how we make seven days without a signal possible, safe and worth it: before you leave, while you are away and after you come back.
- 01From 30 days before
Before you leave
The preparation call
We map what you are leaving behind, who covers what while you are away and the one question you want to take with you.
Your guardian
One person at Remotus becomes your only line to the world. You decide who can reach you through us, and nobody else can.
Emergency levels, in writing
Level 1, health and safety of the people you name: we reach you within hours, through your host. Level 2, a short list of business triggers you choose: we tell you in person and you decide. Everything else waits for Day 7.
The hand-off plan
Out-of-office messages drafted, responsibilities delegated and agreed with your team. Nothing is left half-open.
- 02Day 0
The hand-over
A sealed pouch
Your phone goes into a numbered, sealed pouch that stays with your host. In exchange you receive an analogue watch, your field book and a film camera.
- 03Days 1–6
Life without a signal
One line home, every evening
Your host sends a single message to the people you chose: you are well, and what the day was like. You never touch a screen; they never have to worry.
The field book
Guided pages for each day. Day 1, the withdrawal. Day 3, boredom. Day 5, perspective. Day 7, decisions. And a letter to yourself that we send back to you ninety days later.
Your week, documented
Your host records the journey so you don’t have to. The photographs reach you at home, once you are back.
Safety, always
A trained host, a satellite line for emergencies only, an evacuation plan and insurance cover on every journey.
- 04Day 7
Re-entry
Before the pouch opens
A quiet conversation about what you want to keep from the week. Then a one-page briefing on what happened in the world, and an inbox triage prepared with your team. You come back to a summary, not a flood.
- 057, 30 and 90 days after
Afterwards
Keeping what worked
Three short follow-ups to hold on to the habits you chose. On day ninety, the letter you wrote to yourself arrives.

What a week can look like
Every community sets its own rhythm, so no two weeks are the same. This is the shape most of them share.
- Day 0Arrival and hand-over. You meet your host, seal your phone and spend the first night close to the community.
- Day 1Welcome. Introductions, a first walk and the rules of the place, told by the people who live there.
- Day 2Working alongside. Fishing, herding, harvesting or cooking: whatever the day requires.
- Day 3The quiet day. No plan. Most people say it is the hardest day and the best one.
- Day 4Further in. A longer journey on foot, by boat or on horseback with your hosts.
- Day 5Something to make. A skill learned from someone who has practised it all their life.
- Day 6The last evening. A shared meal, usually chosen by the community.
- Day 7Re-entry. The conversation, the briefing and the pouch, in that order.
Questions we are often asked
What happens if there is a real emergency?
You define emergencies before you leave. For anything on your Level 1 list, your guardian reaches you within hours through your host’s satellite line, and every journey has an evacuation plan.
Can I really not use my phone at all?
That is the point of the week. But the rules are yours: you decide in writing who can reach you and for what, so you can let go without worrying.
Is it safe?
We visit every community in person before we take anyone there. A trained host travels with you, carries satellite communication and follows a clear safety protocol. Medical and evacuation insurance is required.
How fit do I need to be?
You choose the level of physical effort when you request a journey. Most weeks only require ordinary good health, and we adapt to any condition you tell us about.
Can children come?
Yes. Families are welcome, and we advise on the right age for each community and adapt the week to them.
Can we work during the week?
No screens, no calls. Leadership teams can bring one question to think through together, with paper and time, which is often the best work they do all year.
How much does it cost?
Every journey is private, so we quote each one individually. The price depends on group size, place and dates, and always includes the Connection Protocol.
Ready to step away?
Tell us who’s coming and we’ll design the week, and the protocol, around you.
