Why this place

In the far west of Mongolia, Kazakh families still train golden eagles to hunt foxes in winter, a skill passed from parent to child for generations. They live in felt gers and stone winter houses, move with their herds and welcome very few visitors. It is one of the last places on earth where a week without a signal is simply how life works.

We only work with families who host visitors on their own terms and are paid directly for it.

The shape of the week

The programme is being finalised with our local partner on the ground. The days may change, the spirit will not.

  1. Day 0UlaanbaatarArrival and hand-over. One night in the capital, the sealed pouch and a first conversation with your host.
  2. Day 1West to ÖlgiiTwo and a half hours by air to the edge of the country, then the steppe. Dinner at camp with a dombra player.
  3. Days 2–3With the eagle huntersLiving with a Kazakh eagle-hunting family: the birds, the training, the craft of the hoods and gloves, and besbarmak shared around the stove. The nights are theirs too.
  4. Day 4The quiet dayNo plan. The steppe, a notebook and as much silence as you want.
  5. Days 5–6Towards TsambagaravOn horseback towards a 4,193-metre glacier mountain, with nights in a mobile ger camp and time with Tuvan herding families.
  6. Day 7Re-entryA last morning with the family, the flight back to Ulaanbaatar, the conversation before the pouch opens, and a night to land.
